It's the Little Things
While the band Bush sings, "It's the little things that kill," I think that the little things can also make your day. Last week I ordered pizza for the first time in Japan. I was nervous; I even had Stef practice with me before I made the call to Pizza California. I was so happy when they understood me and my pizza arrived without any problems. Today I ordered a pizza again. This time I wasn't as nervous, and I could actually understand most of what they said to me on the phone. Ordering pizza in Japanese is such a little thing, but it really made my day. It's nice to feel like people can actually understand what I'm saying, and as a bonus I got a pizza - and it didn't have any corn or mayo (traditional Japanese toppings). Today life in Japan is good because of "the little things."

Yay for pizza--you're right, it's little things like that that can have a huge impact on a day. I'm curious though, what did you get on it if not the mayo, which, seriously sounds disgusting. My sister went to China last summer and had a similar pizza experience, so I am happy you were able to have an "american" pizza.
I have pretty much zero Japanese, so when I was where you are (pretty much exactly--I taught at Baiko JH/HS 2003-05, and at the Uni 05-06), being able to order pizza was one of my big achievements. It seriously took me nearly two years to feel comfortable experimenting away from the few people had already pronounced for me, reading off the katakana menus.
I highly recommend the Pizza-Cali "curry German deluxe." For a more American-style pizza, you want to go to the (unfortunately more expensive) Pizza-la, IMHO.
Cheers,
PGE
